Oregon State Parks Highway 101 Port Orford to Gold Beach
Pistol River State Park

The word "pistol" in the name of Pistol River refers to a pistol that a soldier reportedly lost here during the Rogue River Indian uprising of 1856. This was the site of an important battle in March of 1856.

Pistol River flows into the Pacific after flowing north behind a foredune for several hundred yards, cutting off the state park parking lot from direct access to the ocean. The area is very popular with windsurfers and surfers come to Pistol River for national competitions.
