Cape Meares National Wildlife Refuge

This NWR was established in 1938 to protect one of the last remnants of coastal old-growth forest. Giant Sitka spruce and western hemlock provide habitat for federally threatened bird species, including bald eagles.

Spring is the time to view peregrine falcons and nesting common murres. During winter months, one can observe three species of scoters, western grebes, and common loons.

A pair of peregrine falcon, a species recovered from near extinction, has nested on the refuge since 1987. A viewing deck offers a glimpse into the nest site of a falcon pair, from early April through July, providing an opportunity to watch the world's fastest animal.

Cape Meares lies along the Three Capes Scenic Route, about 10 miles west of Tillamook. When approaching Tillamook on Highway 101, follow signs for the Three Capes Scenic Route and Oceanside, then turn west to the parking lot for Cape Meares.
