The community has maintained a high quality of life despite the pressure of its popularity for both overnight and day visitors and a growing permanent population. Artists are well represented among the residents; the town has dozens of visual arts studios and galleries.
The arts come alive during the summer at Cannon Beach. Portland State Universityís Haystack Program in the arts and sciences has provided education for adults for more than 30 years. A variety of courses offered includes art, music, writing, and crafts.
The most popular annual event in Cannon Beach is the Sandcastle Contest, scheduled each year in June. The Puffin Kite Festival in April welcomes spring. The town celebrates music and art during the Stormy Weather Arts Festival, the first full weekend of November. And Haystack Holidays has many activities including wreath making, a lamp lighting ceremony, caroling, and a community dinner.
