Built as a summer resort for Portlanders in the 1920s, this Oregon Coast community of 1,200 year-round residents is the center of activity for north Tillamook County. Rockaway Beach has seven miles of sandy beach accessible from the City Wayside in the center of town. Rockaway Beach has shops, restaurants, public restrooms, and more than 300 motel rooms.
Railroad tracks and Highway 101 divide the town between the ocean side and the inland side. The chamber of commerce provides visitor information from its easily recognized red caboose at the wayside.
Recent construction has transformed the appearance of Rockaway Beach. Over the past decade, ocean view homes have appeared on the hillsides behind the city and more recently, large condominium construction has appeared on the oceanfront. A new community center opened in 2005.
