Brookings, situated on America’s Wild Rivers Coast, bills its location as the Banana Belt and on many days the weather in town really is warmer than elsewhere on the coast. Chetco River, between Brookings and unincorporated Harbor, is not as well known as the Rogue, but locals and visitors alike come for great boating, fishing, and swimming. From Brookings it is only a few miles to the California state line.
Considered the gateway to the Oregon Coast and recreation on the Chetco River, Brookings is a center for commercial flower growing and tourism and has become home to a growing number of retirees. The city celebrates its annual Azalea Festival on Memorial Day weekends. City Hall: 898 Elk Drive, 541-469-2163 Chamber of Commerce: 16330 Lower Harbor Road, 800-535-9469 www.brookingsor.com
