Geisel Monument State Historic Site
Geisel Monument State Historic Site marks the location of a skirmish in the Rogue Indian War of 1856. In February of that year, the Geisel family was attacked in its home by a band of Indians, who killed the father and both sons and took the women into captivity. They were later freed. The widow, Christina, married three more times, divorcing twice and outliving her last husband. She was murdered in 1899 and the execution of her murderer in 1900 was the last hanging in Curry County. The graves of the Geisels are located within the historic site. There are also secluded picnic facilities. There is no fee for the use of Geisel Monument State Historic Site, which is located on the west side of Highway 101 between Brookings and Gold Beach.
