Navy Monument Trail, No. 1105a
The Navy Monument Trail lies in the Kalmiopsis Wilderness. This precipitous trail follows an old bulldozer path to the site of a U.S. Navy transport plane (PBY-5A) that crashed in 1944. Parts of the plane can be seen as well as the monument dedicated to the crewmen who died in the crash. The site is located near the south fork of the Chetco River. The trail is situated in the Biscuit Fire area (2002). Although repair crews have attended to numerous affected trails, visitors should realize that traveling and camping may be more challenging, and are advised to exercise greater caution.
