Battle Rock City Park

This park is dedicated to the memory of the First People tribe, Dene Tust Dah, and the pioneer founders of the townsite that would become Port Orford.

Congress passed the Oregon Donation Land Act in 1850. This law entitled Americam settlers to file claims on Indian land in western Oregon — without a treaty with the natives.

Captain William Tichenor, skipper of the steamship Sea Gull landed nine men on June 9, 1851, to found an American settlement. This triggered a bloody fight between the natives and interlopers. The nine were besieged for two weeks on the island now called Battle Rock. The party escaped at night and fled north to Umpqua City.

In July, Captain Tichenor arrived again, this time with a heavily armed party of 70 men, and established the settlement now called Port Orford. Following his retirement, Tichenor became a permanent resident.
