Applegate Trail
This trail is a southern detour off the Oregon Trail. The Applegate is associated with the Oregon because it evaded the challenges of the Blue Mountains, Burnt River Canyon, and Columbia River. It was cut from west to east, cutting across the California Trail at Humboldt River. Following its inauguration, Oregonians took part of the Applegate to and from the gold fields in California. Under the National Trails System Act, Congress designated Applegate Trail as a segment of the California National Historic Trail.
