Nye Beach Historic District
Historic Nye Beach was established by its namesake, John Nye, who obtained a 160-acre land claim in 1866, when Newport was first opened for settlement. Sam Irvin promoted Nye Beach as a destination resort area in the 1880s. By the early 1900s, L.C. Smith, a realtor, promoted the area as "The Promised Land." Smith was responsible for many of the wooden boardwalks that linked the Nye Beach oceanfront neighborhood to the bayfront area. Nye Beach continues today as a pedestrian-friendly district. There is a variety of lodging options, fine and casual dining, shopping, visual and performing arts, as well as essential services. An oceanfront parking lot provides easy handicapped access to Nye Beach. Public restrooms, picnic tables and a foot-wash area make this a wonderful place for the family to enjoy the beach.
