Sixes River Estuary and Beaver Marsh

This site promises outstanding birding. Along the way, park at the pullout to observe Beaver Marsh. Old corrals midway along the marsh offer parking on the right. Begin there by viewing a multitude of nesting red-winged blackbird, as well as savannah and white-crowned sparrow, swallows, or Lincoln's sparrow in winter.

Marsh and open grasslands support a plethora of sora, Virginia rail, marsh wren, and Wilson's snipe. American wigeon, green-winged teal, great egret, phalarope, western and least sandpiper, and an infrequent American bittern also use the area. Among raptors are the red-shouldered hawk, white-tailed kite, and northern harrier.

Continue another mile to a right turn at a Hughes House sign, then hike the path to the beach. Ample flocks of American goldfinch feed with house and purple finch in the thistle. In spring, look for western meadowlark and western bluebird, and scan the fields for migrating Aleutian cackling goose. Treed areas are good for sighting golden-crowned kinglet, chestnut-backed chickadee, and red crossbill. Northern shrike is infrequently spotted in winter. Please leave the gates as you found them while using the trails.

From Port Orford on Highway 101, drive north four miles, turn west onto Cape Blanco Road, then drive two miles to the state park entrance.
