Bird Watching
Bandon
Bandon Marsh National Wildlife Refuge -- Nl-les'-tun Unit
Riparian areas and fresh- and salt-water marshes make this refuge a diverse birding venue, complete with an interpretive sign, expansive viewing deck, and bench. With binoculars or spotting scope, scan for green-winged teal, wigeon, bufflehead, great egret, bald eagle, peregrine falcon, merlin, northern harrier, white-tailed kite, as well as sharp-shinned, Cooper's, red-tailed, and red-shouldered hawk. Among winter songbirds are the palm warbler, black phoebe, savannah sparrow, marsh wren, western meadowlark, and Lapland longspur. Summer delivers myriad tree, violet-green, northern roughwing, and barn swallow, as well as the infrequent Vaux's swift.
From Bandon on Highway 101, drive north over the Coquille River Bridge, then turn east onto North Bank Lane. Proceed one mile and turn right to the paved viewing area.
