North Bend
South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve
This reserve preserves nearly 5,000 acres of fresh- and salt-water marshes, mudflats, and mixed coniferous forest. Hike through the trees to observe winter wren, wrentit, spotted towhee, band-tailed pigeon, ruby-crowned kinglet, mourning dove, song sparrow, violet-green swallow, yellow-rumped warbler, rufous hummingbird, varied thrush, red crossbill, and sharp-shinned hawk.
Take the boardwalk near the water to spot bufflehead, double-crested cormorant, great egret, osprey, greater yellowlegs, white-tailed kite, and bald eagle. The interpretive center features bird checklists, exhibits, and educational programs.
From North Bend on Highway 101, drive south and follow the signs to Charleston. Turn west onto Newmark Street, go three miles, then turn left onto Empire Boulevard/Cape Arago Highway. Drive five miles, turn left onto Seven Devils Road, then proceed 4.5 miles to the main entrance on the left.
