Millicoma Marsh

A trailhead is located on the southeast side of a football field. Bear left at each fork to hike a one-mile loop. In late fall and winter, meander through woodlands and cattail marsh to spot swamp and white-throated sparrow with the occasional clay-colored and Harris's sparrow. Other wintering species include Hutton's vireo, yellow-rumped warbler, golden-crowned kinglet, varied and hermit thrush, northern shrike, red-shouldered hawk, white-tailed kite, and black phoebe.

This is a proven location to locate species uncommonly seen in Oregon during the winter, including orange-crowned warbler, marbled godwit, common yellowthroat, and American bittern. Spring and fall migrants include short-billed dowitcher, pectoral sandpiper, willow flycatcher, and lesser yellowlegs. Dunlin, black turnstone, western and least sandpiper, greater yellowlegs, long-billed dowitcher, and black-bellied plover can be observed in the bay. At daybreak and twilight, scan for barn owl on the hunt, winging over the broad salt marsh.

At the southern end of Coos Bay on Highway 101, turn east onto Coos River/Allegany Road, proceed 1.1 miles, then turn left on D Street. Continue for two blocks and turn right on 4th Avenue, drive 500 feet and turn right on an unpaved road descending to a small parking lot next to a football field.
