Bird Watching
North Bend
Bluebill Loop
A 1.2-mile loop trail leads birders through shorepine, dynamic sand dunes, deflation plains, and around a boggy seasonal lake. In fall and spring, open water supports northern pintail, bufflehead, American wigeon, common merganser, and lesser scaup. The deflation plains are known to harbor fox, song, and white-crowned sparrow, and infrequently, American pipit. Around the lake, suitable habitat attracts northern harrier, white-tailed kite, violet-green swallow, downy woodpecker, great horned owl, great egret and hermit, Townshend's, black-throated gray, yellow, and orange-crowned warbler.
Two miles north of North Bend on Highway 101, turn west on Trans-Pacific Lane, drive one mile, veer right with the road, then turn right onto Horsfall Road. Proceed 1.5 miles, then turn left into the trailhead parking lot.
