Highway 101 Yachats to Florence
Heceta Head Lighthouse Birding
Near the parking lot, Cape Creek meets the Pacific Ocean and draws hundreds of western gull that like to take baths. A brief, but challenging trail to the lighthouse weaves through wind-carved Sitka spruce, regaling birders with near views of a seabird multitude in spring and summer. In addition, birders should anticipate song and white-crowned sparrow, Wilson's and orange-crowned warbler, red crossbill and varied thrush, and wrentit.
The local section of Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge, which lies within binocular range, furnishes habitat for common murre, tufted puffin, double-breasted and Brandt's cormorant, black oystercatcher and pigeon guillemot. Watch the open sea for the occasional short-tailed shearwater, black-legged kittiwake, and common tern.
On Highway 101 in Florence, drive north 13 miles to milepost 178.9, and turn west into the park. Proceed into the parking lot and the trailhead to the lighthouse.
