Bird Watching
Yachats
Smelt Sands State Recreation Site
Walk the historic, three-quarter-mile 804 Trail. All year, be on the lookout for glaucous-winged gull, western gull, and black oystercatcher. From fall to spring, scan for surf and white-winged scoter, Brandt's and pelagic cormorant, black turnstone, surf bird, and infrequently, harlequin duck. In summer, watch for brown pelican to pass by. A scope may spot such far-off pelagic birds as jaeger, northern fulmar, and shearwater.
Drive south on Highway 101 in north Yachats to milepost 163.5, turn west onto Lemwick Lane, then follow the signs to the park.
