Bird Watching
Waldport
North Alsea Bay
The first recommended pullout is rare as an estuarine birding site, because birders can view from 80 feet down. This offers a distinct viewing angle of such diving birds as grebes, loons, cormorants, and scoters, and during fall and winter, such surface-feeding ducks as wigeon and mallard. Next, proceed along Bayview Road, less than a block east of the intersection with South Beaver Creek Road, to a pullout for a view of Bayview Pasture to the north and Alsea Bay to the south. At high tide, Bayview Pasture is frequently visited by wintering shorebirds, and by American and Eurasion wigeon, Canada goose, and infrequently, white-fronted goose.
To reach Alsea Bay, drive south towards Waldport on Highway 101 to milepost 155. Turn east on North Bayview Road, then proceed one mile to the first little pullout by Alsea Bay (look for a corner guardrail).
