Bird Watching
Newport
Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area
This globally important bird area with viewing decks is a birder's prime objective. One of the most-populous common murre communities on the Oregon coast is readily observed. Other summer birds include Brant's and pelagic cormorant, bald eagle, black oystercatcher, pigeon guillemot, western gull, and brown pelican. From December through February, common birds include common loon and peregrin falcon, red-necked and western grebe -- marbled murrelet are infrequent.
Leaving Newport on Highway 101, drive to Lighthouse Drive, turn west and proceed to the parking lot at the lighthouse.
