Depoe Bay
Boiler Bay State Scenic Viewpoint
A memorable place to behold boiling surf in December and March is at this craggy, basalt-banded bay. To classify faraway pelagic birds, know-how and a spotting scope are useful. In spring, birds of note rhinoceros auklet, include black-legged kittiwake loons, and marbled murrelet. Summer invites the sooty shearwater, brown pelican, Heermann's gull, pigeon guillemot, common murre, marbled murrelet, rhinoceros auklet, and black oystercatcher -- intermittently, Cassin's auklet, Sabine's gull, and tufted puffin. In the fall, anticipated species include black-legged kittiwake, sooty and pink-footed shearwater, marbled and ancient murrelet, and rhinoceros auklet -- less often are Buller's and short-tailed shearwater, northern fulmar, and jaeger. In winter, typical species are short-tailed shearwater and black-legged kittiwake. Harlequin duck, northern fulmar, rock sandpiper, pomarine and parasitic jaegers, are infrequent. In Depoe Bay on Highway 101, drive north to the parking lot at Boiler Bay on the highway's west side.
