Bird Watching
Lincoln City
East Devil's Lake State Park/Rock Creek Marsh
Rock Creek Marsh consists of mingled reed and thick willow. In winter, trek through mixed coniferous forest beside a freshwater lake, and scan for pied-billed grebe, ring-necked duck, ruddy duck, gadwall, and green-winged teal. In summer, regulars are bald eagle, osprey, Cooper's and sharp-shinned hawk, wood duck, green heron, and Vaux's swift. In any season, look for Wilson's snipe, Virgina rail, sora, killdeer, marsh wren and song sparrow. At dusk, listen for barn owl. Infrequent migrating species are red phalarope, pectoral sandpiper, and greater yellowlegs.
In Lincoln City on Highway 101, turn east onto East Devil's Lake Road, drive 0.6 mile to a pullout next to the marsh. Scan for birds, then proceed 1.5 miles and enter the park.
