Bird Watching
Lincoln City
D River State Recreation Site
Devil's Lake comprises 680 acres and links to the Pacific via the "world's shortest" river, the D. Noted for large flocks of gulls at the river's mouth, it is a feat of ornithology to identify California, western, glacous-winged, Thayer's, ring-billed, and Bonaparte's gull, as well as a range of hybrids.
To reach the site, birders have to cross Highway 101. The open space around the D River is protected. No trails exist, but birders can wander through open marsh, forested wetlands, shrubbery and scrubland to view spotted sandpiper, cedar waxwing, Vaux's swift, white-crowned sparrow, orange-crowned warbler, belted kingfisher, commmon yellowthroat, and purple finch.
From Highway 101 in Lincoln City, turn east on SE 1st Street just south of the D River bridge, then park.
