Bird Watching
Ziak Wildlife Refuge
Freshwater wetlands and open floodplains draw diving and dabbling ducks to this refuge. Migrating shorebirds are semi-palmated plover, and western and least sandpiper. Nesting birds consist of killdeer, purple martin, and Vaux's swift. The owners tend trumpeter and tundra swan, emperor geese, and maintain purple martin and wood duck nest boxes. From Highway 30 in Knappa, turn north at the flashing light, then take a second right onto Knappa Dock Road. Proceed a mile, then turn right on Ziak-Gnat Creek Lane. Stay on the road to observe birds; the valley on both sides is part of the refuge.
